"When Meaulnes first arrives at the local school in Sologne, everyone is captivated by his good looks, daring, and charisma. But when he disappears for several days, and returns with tales of a strange party at a mysterious house and a beautiful girl hidden within it, Meaulnes has been changed forever. In his restless search for his Lost Estate and the happiness he found there, Meaulnes, observed by his loyal friend Francois, may risk losing everything he ever had. Posed between youthful admiration and adult resignation, Alain-Fourneir's compelling narrator carries the reader through this evocative and often unbearably moving portrayal of desperate friendship and vanished adolescence." -- from back cover

The Lost Estate (or, as it's known in French, Le Grand Meaulnes) is a hypnotic story of a young man in a French boarding school in the late 1800s, who escapes one evening to wander the countryside, and stumbles across a mysterious, grand estate in the woods, in the midst of a magnificent party, where he meets the most beautiful woman he has ever seen. After the party, he makes his way back to the dreary boarding school, but is unable to locate the mysterious estate again, and enlists another boy, who narrates the novel, in a quest to help him find it. This is one of the strangest, most enchanting novels I've read in a while--a great story but also a meditation on maturity, ideals, and the passage of time.
