After being driven from their land by French colonial soldiers in 1909, Nour and his people, "the blue men" must search for a haven out of the desert that will shelter them. Interspersed with the story of Nour is the contemporary story of Lalla, a descendent of the blue men, who lives in Morocco and tries to stay true to the blood of her ancestors while experiencing life as a modern immigrant.

At times seemed tedious in describing the minutia of Lalla's experiences. But at the end of the book I was stunned by the brilliance of the story. I plan to read it again to better understand the culture of the desert and to fully appreciate Le Clezio's descriptive language.

great concept, but overly flowery language makes it almost absurd. I didn't enjoy this book overall- I felt the same things were described over and over again in similar ways with very little actual point.

Loved the vivid descriptions of the landscape, it made you feel you were there in this vast expanse of desert. Interwoven with the people that live there and abroad. Each with their own culture,so different to ours.
