In the Shadow of Ancient RomeStreaming Video - 2010
Despite its wealth and military might, the Roman empire was only one incarnation of history's archetypal hegemonic power. What is it about ancient Rome, then, that has lured so many leaders into the fantasy-in some cases, even the murderous folly-of founding a new imperial realm? This program explores the question, guiding viewers through the past in order to witness Rome's post-Republic spectacle. It also studies Cola Di Rienzo, a 14th-century Roman politician whose longing to rekindle the days of empire helped set the Italian Renaissance in motion, and Benito Mussolini, the 20th-century Fascist driven-and doomed-by his yearning for Roman-style supremacy.
