Danny Meadow Mouse, a vole with a short tail, becomes so dissatisfied with his tail after seeing his cousin Whitefoot the Wood Mouse’s beautiful long tail that he forgets to be on the lookout for Old Whitetail the Marsh Hawk. Old Mr. Toad helps Danny realize that his short tail is safer for where he lives, and that he has a lot to be happy about.

Reddy and Granny Fox try to catch Danny as he runs in his snow tunnels between openings. While his mind is on Reddy and Granny, Danny forgets to watch out for Hooty the Owl.

When Peter Rabbit wants to go eat bark from Farmer Brown’s new peach trees, Danny tells him it’s too dangerous. But Peter goes anyway, and returns with a big problem. Danny helps him. Farmer Brown’s Boy discovers Peter’s home and puts traps around it, but tiny Danny easily takes the food from them.

On the way home from getting some of his favorite seeds, Danny is chased by Mr. Blacksnake, then by Redtail the Hawk, then by Reddy Fox. Fortunately for Danny, Reddy loses his patience.
