Jerry Muskrat notices that the Smiling Pool’s water level is getting lower. Others don’t believe him at first but then see that he is right. And the Laughing Brook, which feeds the Smiling Pool, no longer has much water. Jerry and four others travel up the Laughing Brook to try to find out why there is less water. The slowest of them, Spotty the Turtle, gets to the source of the problem first. Jerry tries to fix the problem but his work is undone overnight. He fixes it again and stays up all night to find out who is causing the problem, and is frightened when he sees who it is.
