Quite enjoyable. It's a nice riff on on Shakespeare and Richard III with a subtle magic system. It felt very Assassin's Apprentice. A castle both forbidding and fascinating to a child, a mentor assassin hidden away in the attics, magic with distinct sounds to it, dangerous kings and delightfully warm kitchens, and a knight with a big cloak for a scared child to hide in. The ending drifted toward melodramatic, and the kids don't always act like kids, but it's a charming, easy tale that plays with what could have beens.
