A wonderful and inspiring story that reminds us that the extraordinary exists in all people; even those that society may deem as improper. Coelho spins a riveting tale of a prostitute who finds her inner light and learns the divine spark is involved in everything we do. The character development is quite wonderful as Maria, the protagonist, faces adversity and overcomes suffering all in a journey of understanding love. A well written adult fairy tale.

I cannot believe I haven't read any of Paulo Coelho's works before! After reading "eleven Minutes," I'm a true blue fan.

My favourite line in the book is, "I want you however you want to be wanted."

Coelho has explored a very delicate subject with finesse and dexterity and at the end of the book I was both satisfied and craving for more.

Paulo Coelho, as in his other novels manages to not only touch on difficult topics but he grasps them and takes them under his wing. Coelho explores sacred sex using Maria, a young Brazilian prostitute as a lens and carries it out beautifully.

Like all books by this author this novel is about finding yourself, your place in this world, and the answer is the same – it’s not necessary to striving to find something extraordinary elsewhere, in other lands. The extraordinary thing is life itself.
But I would say that this book can be regarded as a "manual" to practice good sex. It is written very openly on the subject of sex, trying to put the attention that sex is a very important part of our life and can be excellent only when there is a union of souls, not just bodies.
The only thing that is not credible that the heroine of this novel at the age she is and based on the experience of her life, is so intellectually developed.

I really liked how Paulo has touched the subject of prostitution. It is another topic that Paulo has boldly put out relating to human nature.

"Now, though, I am convinced that no one loses anyone, because no one owns anyone.
That is the true experience of freedom: having the most important thing in the world without owning it." -- from Maria's diary.
