I listened to The Police a lot in high school and college, but stopped not much because I got stick of them as I got sick of how pompous Sting got (Look at me, I love the rain forest and play the lute!). Their early albums have their pop hits, "Syncronicity" is their best album, but their fourth may be their most adventurous, with a slight sci-fi vibe. The reggae influence is overpronounced on "One World," and the preachiness that would undermine Sting is creeping in, but it holds up well. The title is taken from the philosopher Gilbert Ryle.
