A fairly early Adam Dalgleish mystery, before his team was formed. I find the interplay of the team one of the attractions of those later novels. Plenty of atmosphere, but the plot is a bit bizarre. We do learn more about Dalgleish, his growing up and his feelings. Some of the satire struck me as just plain weird, and unnecessary to the plot line. Some interesting characters, though. The ending is a real surprise.
