H. Beam Piper's died in 1964 but his works continue to be relevant today because he emphasized characters and plot instead of quickly outdated technology. A number of his stories are modelled after or contain elements of historical events. I read "Little Fuzzy" and "Fuzzy Sapiens" first in my early teens and now own a copy of everything Piper published. Wikipedia has a decent write-up on the author and I'd recommend several of his other stories.
