From the writer-director of the Academy Awardʼ-Winning movie ONCE. Gretta (Keira Knightley) and Dave (Adam Levine) are college sweethearts and songwriting partners who head to New York when he lands a major label deal. But the trappings of fame soon lead Dave astray and a lovelorn Gretta is left on her own. Her world takes a positive turn when disgraced record-label exec Dan (Mark Ruffalo) is captivated by her raw talent. An enchanting portrait emerges of a mutually transformative collaboration, set to the soundtrack of a summer in New York City.

Begin Again started off slow for me but got me hooked as it went on. It was a sweet movie which showed that there's always something good for you around the corner, even if you feel like nothing is going right for you. It makes you laugh and smile and just makes you feel happy and inspired to pursue your goals. It had wonderful actors who played their parts very well and it also had beautiful songs.

This musical about the complications of Love and freedom and letting go and moving on and singing your heart out is totally joyful and contagious.
I loved every minute of it but especially the jam sessions outdoors.

Predictable but pleasant. Ms. Knightley has a nice smile but ......

Fantastic movie, everything about it impeccable. Best I've seen in years. So many layers of meaning. Too bad so many people missed it and gave it such a crummy review, I don't get it.

I couldn't stand any of the main characters, or the music, or the so-called story. The film is dreadful, idiotic, pathetic.

With Begin Again, writer/director John Carney attempted to recreate the magic of his masterpiece, Once. The result isn't terrible. Ultimately this film does not work nearly as well as Once, but it has its moments, pretty good music and James Corden in a supporting role. If you haven't seen Once yet, I recommend checking out that movie instead. Sing Street, Carney's film after Begin Again, is also music-focused and a more enjoyable movie than this one. Begin Again may also be streamed through the OverDrive online resource available through Hennepin County Library. The movie is rated R for language.

I just could not get into it. Might be a better film for more artistic people, but who knows. Just seemed 'blah.'

I liked this film. You get a inside look at the music industry from people who have lived it, breathed it, and did all kinds of things with it, like Adam Levine, who you may be more familiar with as the lead vocals for the group Maroon 5. There's talent all over the place in this film, but it's the singing and songwriting that add a special something to this film. I never would have guessed tunes like that would come out of Keira Knightly as Gretta, but it did, and it did so beautifully: And you have broken every single rule/And I have loved you like a fool. And Adam Levine as Dave, especially with his signature falsettos, along with the songwriting, in which the composition complements, well, they can just about tell stories on their own. The storyline is fractured in some parts, but I think I like it like that, and the making of Gretta's demo adds artistry and imagination...

Things just get so crazy, living life gets hard to do
Sunday morning rain is falling and I'm calling out to you
Singing, someday it'll bring me back to you
Find a way to bring myself back home to you

That may be all I need
In darkness she is all I see

There is a flower in your hair

Oh, yeah, yeah...

If you treat this more as an extended music video and less as a movie, you'll probably enjoy it. We loved the music in it and Keira Knightley turns out to be a pretty good singer - loved the concept for the album, too. The rest of it was a bit meh. Worth it for the music? Probably.
