How did people teach their kids about the constellations before the Star Map app? They looked at this wonderful book by the creator of Curious George, H.A. Rey. His sky maps and explanations of the constellations are as simple to understand as his picture books--in fact he suggests constellations were the very first picture books: Before humans were able to write and draw, the ancients connected the stars to tell stories in the sky. I never encountered this book as a kid, but I wish I had, since somehow, better than any other book on the subject I've seen, it illustrates just how much the Gemini really look like twins, Orion like a hunter, etc. So even if you've got the app, this is a great thing to have on hand before, during, and after gazing at the night sky.
