In this must-read book for anyone striving to succeed, pioneering psychologist Angela Duckworth shows parents, educators, students, and business people--both seasoned and new--that the secret to outstanding achievement is not talent but a focused persistence called "grit."Why do some people succeed and others fail? Sharing new insights from her landmark research on grit, MacArthur "genius" Angela Duckworth explains why talent is hardly a guarantor of success. Rather, other factors can be even more crucial such as identifying our passions and following through on our commitments. Drawing on her own powerful story as the daughter of a scientist who frequently bemoaned her lack of smarts, Duckworth describes her winding path through teaching, business consulting, and neuroscience, which led to the hypothesis that what really drives success is not "genius" but a special blend of passion and long-term perseverance. As a professor at the University of Pennsylvania, Duckworth created her own "character lab" and set out to test her theory. Here, she takes readers into the field to visit teachers working in some of the toughest schools, cadets struggling through their first days at West Point, and young finalists in the National Spelling Bee. She also mines fascinating insights from history and shows what can be gleaned from modern experiments in peak performance. Finally, she shares what she's learned from interviewing dozens of high achievers--from JP Morgan CEO Jamie Dimon to the cartoon editor of The New Yorker to Seattle Seahawks Coach Pete Carroll. Winningly personal, insightful, and even life-changing, Grit is a book about what goes through your head when you fall down, and how that--not talent or luck--makes all the difference.

What a disappointment! Heard it mentioned so much in the press, turns out by and large chit-chat with little substance. A popular book based more on successful promotion.

This is a good e-book. Be careful when listening to it.
(The cd (with my use) played the cd tracks out of order. I simply opened a Window and manually clicked to play them in order).

About half way through the cd turned to the ability of adults to teach children GRIT.
The Book definitely turns to the 'raising of a child', Love with a Firm Hand OR a Firm Hand with Love? To nurture and build GRIT.

I was using this from a business point of view, so your purpose and listening to this audio book may give a higher rating.

Excellently read by the author - really, she could do it professionally! Its a mix of popularization of research findings, and an application of those findings to large areas of life: schooling, parenting, work, vocation, and even public affairs. It gives useful and unambiguous advice.

Not bad. You can grow grit internally by
1) cultivate interest
2) daily habit of exceeding challenge practice
3) learn to hope when all seem lost
4) connect work to purpose beyond self

GRIT is a study of successful people and the character traits that they share. There have been a lot of studies of this nature and this book references many of these previous studies and provides many inspirational quotations. What is perhaps unique (for me anyway) to this book is the guidance offered to parents for encouraging the development of traits that promote success in life. It seems to me that much of the basic findings in this book have been known a long time.
