VERY GOOD 1968 Orson Welles color movie originally made for French television.
The plot is a bit enigmantic (life IS enigmatic is almost the film theme), but has excellent cinematography, etc. - and excellent Eric Satie piano music.

Although its a relatively short film (one hour), they were able to make it so that it seemed twice as long. There is some interesting cinematography, but the film is very strongly propelled by the writing, which is better considered as a form of thought, in this case thinking about stories and related ideas, prophecies, history, stories that are true, that are false, that are believed, or not. Welles' makeup is obvious and therefore bad; he did learn a lot from "Playwright As Thinker" (Bentley).

Moreau is this movie's saving grace. Welles was obligated by contract to film in colour and the character who suffers the most is the gray-faced Welles.

4 stars - Welles fans can fans look for signs that the film is directed with exceptional skill. There is a great commentary track and also an extra disc of supplementary material exploring Welles. Non-Welles fans should skip this and try Citizen Kane, The Magnificent Ambersons, Touch of Evil, The Lady from Shanghai, and The Stranger, all much more accessible than The Immortal Story.
