Sunderland! Thirteen hundred years ago, it was the greatest center of learning in the whole of Christendom and the very cradle of English consciousness. In the time of Lewis Carroll, it was the greatest shipbuilding port in the world. To this city that gave the world the electric light bulb, the stars and stripes, the millennium, the Liberty Ships and the greatest British dragon legend came Carroll in the years preceding his most famous book, Alice in Wonderland, and here are buried the roots of his surreal masterpiece. Enter the famous Edwardian palace of varieties, The Sunderland Empire, for a unique experience: an entertaining and epic meditation on myth, history and storytelling and decide for yourself - does Sunderland really exist?

I have much appreciation for this mighty graphic novel as it was obviously a labor of love. It's packed with information galore about the UK, the north east of England, Sunderland, Alice Liddel, Lewis Carrol, many many other 'Mackems' and the writer himself Bryan Talbot. As you can imagine the volume of information must have been difficult to put together in a coherent manner and while I think it was done admirably this graphic novel made my head hurt.

An AMAZING book— the history of Sunderland, England mixed with the history of Alice in Wonderland. This book is NOT a quick read, but is worth the effort.

It's half a great fresh look at Carroll and half a celebration of english culture.
It's also very unlinear so left-hemisphere dominant types beware. Structurally it recalls the BBC documentary series "Connections" by James Burke. If this is a Brit thing, i sez good on them mate!
[PS: if you're a parent and want to tempt your offspring into thinking, especially creatively, you could do worse than having this book lie about the livingroom.]

Intriguing and at times beautifully surrealistic inter-play of images; if you like Alice, you will enjoy this

And inside is a rabbit who begins to tell the story of the town of Sunderland. The rabbit tells the man that everything he says is true... except one of the stories. One of the stories is completely made up. It's up to the reader to decide which
