Even though the main protagonist of the book is only aged 13, this is definitely not children's literature, but rather a work for adults or young adults (16/17++). The entire book is a lead-up to the horrific mass suicide, encouraged, even compelled by the Japanese military, who controlled everything and everyone on the Mariana Islands, in western Micronesia, ever since they colonized them in the early 1900s. The book is well written, but what a shame that there is no map of the area, let alone of the island of Saipan, where almost everything in the book occurs!
