An epic film from Oscar-nominated director Deepa Mehta, based on the Booker Prize winning novel by Salman Rushdie. At the stroke of midnight on August 15, 1947, as India proclaims independence from Great Britain, two newborn babies are switched by a nurse in a Bombay hospital. Saleem Sinai, the illegitimate son of a poor woman, and Shiva, the offspring of a wealthy couple, are fated to live the destiny meant for each other. Their lives become mysteriously intertwined and are inextricably linked to India's whirlwind journey of triumphs and disasters. From the unlikely romance of Saleem's grandparents to the birth of his own son, Midnight's Children is a journey at once sweeping in scope and yet intimate in tone. Hopeful, comic and magical -- the film conjures images and characters as rich and unforgettable as India herself. An official selection at the Toronto International Film Festival, at the Vancouver International Film Festival, and at the BFI London Film Festival. The film was distributed by 20th Century Fox in India. Brpadcasted on Starz Entertainment in the U.S.

This is a 2012 Canadian-British film directed by Deep Mahta, based on Salman Rushdie's 1981 novel of the same name.
The screenplay is so ill-contrived that I can hardly believe the dramatic story at all.
Nobody makes a good movie out of a bad screenplay.
It would be much better if the director sticked to only the historical events.

At midnight, Great Britain gave birth to an independent India, and at the same time, many Indian mothers gave birth to their children. The film is based on Salman Rushdie’s novel, Midnight’s Children, a fictional account of the human children born along with the immediate birth of India and the subsequent births of Pakistan and Bangladesh. While some viewers wished the movie had moved along faster, I had the feel that the book should have been made into a 4 or 5 hour TV series. From the internet, I found that the original idea was to film a TV series in Sri Lanka, but the idea was shelved because of Islamic opposition. The great Hindi/Canadian director, Deepa Mehta, may have done the best she could in a 2+ hour film.

I enjoyed this movie. Took a long time to figure out what the point is but it had a nice flow to things and very interesting to see life in India from different view points.

I found this movie very slow to get to the point of the movie. I gave up part way through the movie. Would not bother viewing this again.

Some great books really are just unfilmable. Its not a terrible film but in no way does it capture the book. Magical realism can be translated into great films, such as "The Tin Drum" and "Like Water for Chocolate", but this film just didn't quite retain the voice and the feel of the book.

I also found the other comments interesting! My husband and I both enjoyed this movie, and found the storyline intriguing. We even said that it's amazing that someone could come up with such an in depth story. As for it being 'hard to follow' (as others previously stated), we found it to be unique and engaging. We do both enjoy 'out of the box' living, and like learning about other cultures, and found this movie to be different in a really good way.

I usually like This directors movies and I watch it to the end but it was pretty hokey! Maybe the book is hokey as well. Never managed to read any of Rushdie's books. I'm not into imaginary people and witches.Visually great about India but a waste of time

Having read to book first, I found the movie somewhat easier to follow. However the book remains the best storytelling to me.

When you read Rushdie's recent autobiography you are able to gain some interesting insight to this story.

This movie was confusing to me. Not quite what I expected. I did finish the movie but I found it hard to follow.
